Indulgence
Debut show held at my residence
In my second year in Singapore, I had created quite a collection of artworks that I felt were worthy of being displayed at an Art Gallery. However, after approaching seven private owned galleries, I realised that as an un-established foreign student artist, I will have to wait for my turn. At the time, I was renting out a government housing flat known as an HDB along with a couple of friends where I had the luxury of spacious living room. Upon a little brainstorming and taking permission from my landlord, I decided to hold my debut Art Show - 'Indulgence' at my residence on 7 April 2019.

I began to hype the event at my school, invited collaborators and started building on a visual theme. I wanted the show to convey the overwhelming experience of being a creator, and how I like to indulge in the creative process.

Some of my most appreciated paintings were from a collaboration with oil painter Israfil Ridhwan. I would vandalise his paintings with quirky elements, symbols, paint stains and doodles with his permission of course.

I would stick numerous found objects over his painting, it started to feel like a game. To name a few, on this specific painting I stuck a lighter, a blade, a feather, an iPod, a CD case, glow in the dark tape and paint.

My significant additions to these paintings are a GoPro, a layer of correction pen doodles, a circular mirror and many pistachio shells.

Installations were setup in every corner of the flat, a cozy space to relax with a selection of my sketchbooks, tape installations and printmaking works stuck on the ceiling.

Another significant work on display was an image series of used painting palettes. At the time I would teach acrylic painting part-time at a private studio and would document used palettes of the students as I felt they displayed so much character.

Vandalised dysfunctional fan with a dangling earring, painting stuck on a painting and a '?' on a chair.

I was amazed at the support and felt proud of being able to provide a unique experience that started many new conversations. A repeating topic of conversation was what exactly qualifies as an art space which was very intriguing to delve deeper into.I was also greeted by a box of cupcakes by my peers for all those visiting and could not have asked for a better debut 'show'.
